Imizamo Yethu’s Peterson infill switched on

The City of Cape Town switched on the electricity to households in the Peterson infill informal settlement in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay this week. This electrification project will immediately improve the lives of households. 

The City's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen and officials in the City's Energy Directorate shared a special moment with beneficiary Nokuzola Mshiya Qumani (60) when they switched on the electricity to her family's home.

In City-supplied areas and on City-owned land, where it is possible to do so, almost all older existing informal settlements in the metro have been electrified.

'The City's electrification projects in the various informal settlements are examples of its commitment to improving the lives of residents. Our electrification projects not only connect residents to the grid and provide adequate street lighting, but also help residents grow their small home-based businesses; enhances safety, reduces the risk of fires and improves the learning environment for school and university students.

'The City spent approximately R1,4 million to complete this project and we are pleased to finish it on schedule.  

'As part of this particular project, our teams upgraded the area's mini substation to accommodate the additional households of the area. The City thanks all teams and contractors for their hard work and all beneficiaries for working with us,' said Councillor Van Reenen.
